Laura Schawelka
Laura Schawelka’s work examines modes of representation and display, the production of value in its systems and the politics of seduction through video, photography, installation and collage.
Questions are: What happens when objects of desire turn into imagery? And what when this depictions are desired themselves? When the lie is so obvious it only talks about the truth? When the viewer has a stronger physical connection to the image as object, what happens to its subject? Products become stand-ins for objectified bodies since the lens turns everything equally into fiction. A critique of representation is only possible from within it. In Schawelka’s work the subject’s allure is kept arms-length away, but her arm is in it nonetheless.
